Enabling Phishing and Malware Protection

Phishing attacks usually originate from email messages that attempt to lure the recipient into updating their personal information on fake, but very real-looking websites.


The protection works by checking the sites that you visit against lists of reported phishing and malware sites. These lists are automatically downloaded and updated every 30 minutes or so. The technical details of the safe-browsing protocol are also publicly available.


To check if the phishing and malware protection is turned on, please follow the instructions below:

  1. ​Click the Chrome menu on the browser toolbar.

  2. Click Settings and then click Advanced Settings.

  3. Under Privacy, check Protect you and your device from dangerous sites.

  1. ​Click the menu button.

  2. Click Options.

  3. Click the Security tab.

  4. Check the settings under Block and deceptive content.

  1. ​Click Preferences and then click Security Panel.

  2. Check Fraudulent sites. Note: Close the window to implement your changes.

  1. ​Click Tools and then click Safety.

  2. Click Turn off SmartScreen Filter and then select Turn on SmartScreen Filter.

  3. From the Microsoft SmartScreen Filter dialog box, click OK.
